Rarely in life is one so touched by another individual who so closely matches one’s own personality, likes and dislikes that he becomes an extension of yourself. My family and I were blessed to be able to share a lifetime of warmth, fellowship, growth, and common interests with Willie R. Westbrook, that he became the additional brother whom we loved so dearly. With his transition to heaven, my heart will always be touched by the memories of “Willie Boy” as we grew through infancy, our mischievous youths, and became committed family men in adulthood.
Some of my fondest memories are the times shared between our families and the personal moments I enjoyed with Willie Boy when we talked of life struggles, undying faith, family devotion, and unwavering love of family. I remain eternally grateful to my dear brother for his special affection for both my father Lewis and my mother Roxie, and our joint enjoyment of Southern Soul music.
My primary introduction to the Southern Soul music genre occurred decades ago, through Willie Boy, who was so famously known as “DJ Blaze”. The Southern Soul combination of gospel, country, R&B, and blues is uniquely a part of the African American experience. In memory of Willie Royal Westbrook, it is my hope that you find the same celebration and enjoyment.
